{"id":212,"date":"2022-01-03T11:29:20","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T16:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/weswong.com\/WongoTech\/?p=212"},"modified":"2022-01-08T11:30:45","modified_gmt":"2022-01-08T16:30:45","slug":"project-management-church-ministry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/weswong.com\/WongoTech\/project-management-church-ministry\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Management &#038; Church Ministry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This is part 1 of a 4-part series on project management in church ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Project Management Institute\u2019s <em>A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/pmbok-guide-standards\">PMBOK<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0Guide<\/a>), a <span style=\"color:#a38a00\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong><em>project<\/em><\/strong> <\/span>is a<span style=\"color:#3ca300\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> temporary endeavour<\/span> (i.e., delimited with a start and a finish) to create a unique outcome (product, service, result). In the local church and Christian ministry context, whether it is a building\/facilities reno undertaking, fundraising campaign, short term mission, conference, evangelistic and revival meetings, board and staff meetings, preparing and delivering a sermon, preparing and teaching a course\/class, preparing and facilitating a Bible study, undertaking research study, working on a task force, it is a <strong><em><span style=\"color:#a39200\" class=\"has-inline-color\">project<\/span><\/em><\/strong>. These activities have a beginning and an end, and produce a unique outcome. Check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/churchfuel.com\/project-management-for-churches-a-short-guide\/\">post<\/a> which provides a <sub>short<\/sub> guide to manage projects in churches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When managing projects (e.g., implementing changes) keep in mind the chronological sequence: <strong><span style=\"color:#a30500\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>Ready<\/em><\/span><\/strong>, <strong><em><span style=\"color:#a39700\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Set<\/span><\/em><\/strong>, <em><strong><span style=\"color:#15a300\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Go<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#5ba300\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> <\/span><\/em>\u2026 and <em><span style=\"color:#a30000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Ready<\/span><\/em>, <em><span style=\"color:#a38100\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Aim<\/span><\/em>, <span style=\"color:#2ba300\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><em>Fire<\/em> <\/span>\u2026 not: <span style=\"color:#a30000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Ready<\/span>, <span style=\"color:#34a300\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Fire <\/span>and then <span style=\"color:#a3a000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Aim <\/span><em>maybe<\/em>! So once the <strong>W<em>HY<\/em><\/strong> is addressed (i.e., raison d\u2019\u00eatre, purpose, objectives) then the <strong>W<em>HAT<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>W<em>HEN<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>W<em>HO<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>ho<\/em>W<\/strong> <strong><em>long<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>ho<\/em>W<\/strong> <strong><em>much<\/em><\/strong> need to be addressed. Thence given the reason(s) and the driver(s) for the <strong>W<em>HY<\/em><\/strong>, break down (decompose) the component parts of <strong>W<em>HAT<\/em><\/strong> needs to be done. Moreover, the <strong>W<em>HEN<\/em><\/strong> (milestones) and <strong>W<em>HO<\/em><\/strong> will do <strong>W<em>HAT<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>W<em>HEN<\/em><\/strong> need to be articulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bear in mind that project team members and stakeholders play various disparate roles and have different responsibilities. This diversity can be distilled in a <span style=\"color:#5700a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\"><strong><em>DARCI<\/em><\/strong> <\/span>matrix that identifies with clarity the roles and responsibilities of team members; i.e., <strong>W<em>HO<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em><span style=\"color:#5c00a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">D<\/span><\/em><\/strong>ecides, <strong><em><span style=\"color:#4100a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">A<\/span><\/em><\/strong>pproves, <strong><em><span style=\"color:#4a00a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">R<\/span><\/em><\/strong>esponsible to do the work, <strong><em><span style=\"color:#5300a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">C<\/span><\/em><\/strong>onsults and is just <strong><em><span style=\"color:#4e00a3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">I<\/span><\/em><\/strong>nformed. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/churchleaders.com\/pastors\/pastor-articles\/353946-project-management-for-churches-a-short-guide.html\/2\">post<\/a>, \u201cProject Management for Churches: A Short Guide,\u201d step #4 is to monitor progress, which includes the <strong>W<em>HAT IF<\/em><\/strong> (risk management) in response to invalid assumptions and unexpected surprizes\/obstacles popping up during the execution of the project. In addition to the <strong><em>ho<\/em>W<em> long<\/em><\/strong> (duration), the project team needs to determine <strong><em>ho<\/em>W<\/strong> the work will be carried out and estimate <strong><em>ho<\/em>W<em> much<\/em><\/strong> (budget) the project could cost (time, materials, services).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke+14%3A28-30&amp;version=NIV\">Luke<\/a> reminds us of what the LORD Jesus admonished:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<span style=\"color:#a30000\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won\u2019t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?\u00a0For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,\u00a0saying, \u2018This person began to build and wasn\u2019t able to finish.\u2019<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is part 1 of a 4-part series on project management in church ministry.
